About our organization

Carmabi is a non-profit organization dedicated to research, conservation, and sustainable management of Curaçao’s natural ecosystems.

Founded as a marine research station, Carmabi has evolved into an integrated organization combining science, nature conservation, education, and sustainable park management. Today, Carmabi operates as a social enterprise, where economic activities support long-term ecological and societal impact.

In line with our continued professionalization, Carmabi has transitioned to a two-tier governance structure, separating management and supervision to strengthen transparency, accountability, and decision-making.

Our organization brings together science, conservation, education, and park management, working closely with local and international partners to translate knowledge into action.

Governance structure

Carmabi operates under a two-tier governance model, consisting of a Management Board and a Supervisory Board.

This structure ensures a clear separation between executive responsibilities and independent oversight, strengthening checks and balances, transparency, and accountability within the organization.

Carmabi’s governance is aligned with international principles of good governance and is designed to support effective decision-making and long-term sustainability.

Management Board

The Management Board is responsible for the day-to-day management of Carmabi and the implementation of its strategy and policies.

The board acts collectively in the interest of the organization and is accountable to the Supervisory Board.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Operational management of the organization
  • Development and implementation of strategy and policy
  • Financial management, planning, and reporting
  • Monitoring performance, risks, and compliance
  • Leadership of staff, departments, and projects
  • Transparent communication with internal and external stakeholders

Supervisory Board

The Supervisory Board oversees the Management Board and ensures that Carmabi operates in line with its mission, values, and legal obligations.

The Supervisory Board also acts as employer of the Management Board and provides strategic guidance.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supervising management performance and organizational results
  • Providing strategic advice and oversight
  • Ensuring accountability, transparency, and integrity
  • Monitoring financial continuity and risk management
  • Approving key policies, budgets, and annual reports
