WILLEMSTAD – As part of Project Salu, an initiative by Carmabi funded by the Dutch Fund for Cultural Participation, Seru Largu National Park has successfully hosted several masterclasses. These sessions were designed to introduce both adults and youth to the role of nature and cultural guides, with the aim of sharing the park’s rich history and unique ecology with visitors.
Two Successful Masterclasses for Aspiring Guides
Over two intensive sessions, more than 50 participants gained in-depth knowledge from local experts on topics such as:
- The history of slavery and salt production at the Jan Kok salt flats.
- The ecology of Seru Largu, including its flora, fauna, and the critical importance of mangroves.
- Professional guiding skills, such as effectively leading groups and conveying historical and ecological information.
Participants appreciated the interactive approach and the opportunity to apply their knowledge during practical exercises in the park. One participant remarked, "This masterclass deepened my understanding of our history and strengthened my passion for conservation—I want to learn even more!"
Helping Youth Discover Their Potential as Junior Guides
Young people can download materials from https://www.serulargupark.org/nl_NL/lesmateriaal to experiment with becoming Junior Guides. The resources include assignments for students and a teacher’s guide.
By designing and presenting their own tours, students can showcase their creativity and newly acquired knowledge. This interdisciplinary approach can be initiated in schools through subjects like biology, geography, history, or language arts. Topics include salt production, mangroves, lime kilns, and the history of slavery. The most impressive tours will be incorporated into the park’s official offerings, with local residents serving as guides.
Recognition and Gratitude
These initiatives were made possible through the support of the Dutch Fund for Cultural Participation as part of the "Slavery History Commemoration Year." Carmabi and Seru Largu National Park express their heartfelt gratitude to the fund for its essential contribution to the success of this project.
About Project Salu
Project Salu aims to increase knowledge and awareness among the residents of Willibrordus about their ancestors and the history of salt production, while also strengthening community bonds. The project includes various subprojects that collectively contribute to a deeper understanding of the history of slavery for both the local community and visitors. Be sure to visit the lime kiln and mini salt flats when you’re near Willibrordus.
Future Plans
Carmabi and Seru Largu National Park are committed to building on the success of these masterclasses. Plans are underway to regularly host educational programs and community events to raise awareness and foster engagement in preserving Curaçao’s cultural and natural heritage.
