Press Release:  70 Years of Carmabi: From Marine Lab to Leading Knowledge Center in the Caribbean

WILLEMSTAD – On May 29, the Caribbean Research and Management of Biodiversity Foundation (Carmabi) celebrated its 70th anniversary. During a festive evening at the organization’s headquarters, employees, researchers, volunteers, and (inter)national partners came together to reflect on an impressive journey: from a modest marine laboratory to a regionally recognized center for nature research, education, and conservation.

Press Release: Many and Diverse Groups Participate in Successful Coral Rearing Program

WILLEMSTAD – Last week, another coral rearing program was hosted at the CARMABI Foundation in Piscadera, organized by SECORE International in collaboration with local foundations REACT and Reef Renewal Foundation Curaçao, The DiveShop, and CARMABI itself. This partnership provided local youth, NGOs, and participants from the Bahamas, Bonaire, St. Croix/USVI, Colombia, Trinidad & Tobago, and Honduras with the opportunity to learn about coral larvae cultivation techniques developed in Curaçao by SECORE and CARMABI, and how these techniques can be used for research and coral reef restoration.

Press Release:  Carmabi Joins International Call: Science as a Guiding Principle for Ocean Protection

Willemstad, June 6, 2025 – The Carmabi Foundation endorses the “Science for Ocean Action” manifesto, presented this week during the One Ocean Science Congress in Nice. The manifesto, drafted by hundreds of international scientists, will be presented to the delegations attending the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference, also taking place in Nice next week. The document emphasizes that scientific knowledge about the state of the ocean is widely available, and that what is urgently needed now is political courage to turn that knowledge into decisive action.

Press Release: One in three coral species in Curaçao threatened with extinction

WILLEMSTAD – During the United Nations Climate Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, the new Red List of Threatened Species was unveiled. The previous list was last presented in 2008. Over recent years, information on all 892 reef-building coral species worldwide has been re-evaluated to determine whether their survival status has improved or worsened. This evaluation was conducted by a global group of coral experts, including researchers from CARMABI. All 66 coral species found in the Caribbean are also present around Curaçao, and of these, 19 are now so critically endangered that they are at risk of extinction throughout the Caribbean region.
